Autism and Sleep: Solving Bedtime Battles and Night Waking

Autism and Sleep: Solving Bedtime Battles and Night Waking

Why Sleep Is So Hard in Autism

Research suggests that between half and 80% of autistic children experience significant sleep difficulties — trouble falling asleep, frequent night waking, very early rising. The causes stack up: differences in melatonin regulation, sensory sensitivities (the hum of the AC, the texture of pajamas), anxiety, difficulty winding down from preferred activities, and sometimes medical issues like reflux or restless legs.

Poor sleep is never "just" a night problem. It amplifies daytime meltdowns, slows learning, and exhausts the whole family. The good news: sleep responds remarkably well to systematic intervention.

Build the Foundation: The Sleep Environment

  • Dark: blackout curtains — especially relevant during Dubai's long summer daylight

  • Cool and consistent: a steady AC temperature beats fluctuating settings; some children sleep better with the fan's white noise, others need silence

  • Sensory-checked bedding: seams, tags and fabrics matter; a weighted blanket helps some children settle (follow weight guidance)

  • Screens off 60 minutes before bed: blue light suppresses the melatonin autistic children may already produce differently

The Bedtime Routine That Works

  • Same steps, same order, every night — predictability is the sleep aid: bath → pajamas → brush teeth → one story → song → lights out

  • Make it visual: a picture schedule on the bedroom wall lets your child track and anticipate each step

  • Keep it short and calm: 20–30 minutes; energetic play ends before the routine starts

  • Fade your presence gradually: if your child needs you to fall asleep, move your chair further from the bed every few nights rather than going cold turkey

When to Get Professional Help

If sleep problems persist after a month of consistent routine, it's time for an assessment. Our team looks at the full picture — behavioral patterns, medical factors (we can run lab tests at home, including iron and vitamin D), and daytime routines — and builds a personalized sleep plan as part of the Bloom Compass Program, coached step by step in your own home.
