Developmental Delay in Children: Signs, Causes and Support in Dubai

What Is a Developmental Delay?
A developmental delay means a child is significantly behind peers in one or more areas: speech and language, motor skills, cognitive skills, social-emotional development, or daily living skills. Some children have a delay in a single area; a global developmental delay involves two or more.
Milestone Red Flags Worth Acting On
- By 12 months: not sitting independently, no babbling, not responding to familiar voices
- By 18 months: not walking, no single words, not pointing to request or show
- By 2 years: fewer than 50 words, no two-word phrases, not imitating actions
- By 3 years: speech mostly unintelligible to family, no pretend play, extreme difficulty separating from parents
- Any age: losing skills previously mastered — always assess promptly
Is It Delay or Autism?
They overlap but are not the same. A delayed child typically develops along the usual path, just later; autism involves qualitative differences in social communication and behavior, not just timing. Many children have both. Because the support plans differ, a proper differential assessment matters — guessing wastes the months that matter most.
How Bloom Supports Children with Developmental Delay
Our Child Development Assessment (ages 1–4) maps your child's profile across learning and cognition, physical and motor abilities, and language and communication. From there, our developmental delay program combines:
- Neurodevelopmental therapies — speech, occupational and behavioral support targeted at lagging areas
- Integrative functional medicine — screening for medical contributors such as iron deficiency, thyroid issues or sleep problems
- Evidence-based nutrition — because growing brains need the right fuel
- Parent coaching — daily routines turned into therapy opportunities
Everything can be delivered at home across Dubai or at our center — whichever serves your child best.
The Most Important Message
Developmental delays respond to intervention — that is the whole point of finding them early. "He'll grow out of it" is sometimes true; making sure is always better.
